Why you should print those photos! ⎪ Outer Banks Destination Photographer

Today’s blog topic is one that I think all photographers struggle with – getting your clients to PRINT their photos. Let’s face it, we’re living in a digital world today. Fewer people seem to recognize the importance of actually printing their photos.

You’re probably asking yourself “What’s the big deal? They’re all on my computer!” Here’s why:

I totally get it. I’m not that old. Not only am I the big sister of an almost-sixteen-year-old, I too am guilty of not printing my photos or using my cell phone to capture every day moments. It’s just not enough y’all.

There was a time, before digital, where you didn’t have a choice but to get prints of your session or wedding. When I started photography we were only working in film – and each session received a set of 4×5 printed proofs – digital files weren’t even an option. As much as I love digital now, ask any of my college professors, I went into the digital age kicking and screaming.

Think about how much photography has changed over the years. We cannot take for granted that we think we’ll always have the capability to print or access or photos – media formats are constantly changing. Take film for example. While there are handful of professional print labs (I’m not talking about the drug store!) who can properly handle and print from negatives they are becoming few and far between. Pretty soon, it’s going to be virtually impossible print or even develop a negative unless you yourself have the capability to do it. As cameras change, so do file types and sizes. Newer cameras produce files that aren’t even readable by older versions of Photoshop (there are ways around it, but not without a whole lot of extra effort).

PRINT THOSE PHOTOS, FOLKS! Even if it’s just to put into an album or box. Don’t rely on facebook and your computer to archive your memories. Remember, those things might be gone after time too.

I always love love love when my clients send me pictures of what they’ve done with their prints. I recently blogged Kristy’s OBX Family Session from this past summer. Kristy’s main objective for the session was to have large wall prints made, because of that we really focused more on a traditional image rather than spending half our session doing candid photos. They were troopers because the weather that day was iffy, and we even had to take cover for a bit to let some rain pass. Overcast are some of the best to shoot on, because the lighting is so soft and dreamy.

Kristy chose this photo as her focal image – and opted for a gorgeous 24×36 mounted print (rather than canvas) because she knew she wanted to have it framed:

Today I was so excited to have an email from Kristy with a few photos she’d taken of her family portrait hanging above their fireplace. She picked the PERFECT size (24×36) to then have matted and framed. Bigger is always better! She’s graciously allowed me to share her photos with y’all, and hopefully it will help inspire others to get those photos on your walls!

Special thanks to my favorite tongue-in-cheek photographer, who always tells it like it is, Missy MWAC for the quote!
