How many years have you been in business? : 15 years

Tell us about your business! : Engaging Events offers both full service wedding planning and day of wedding coordinating. We cover the Outer Banks from Corolla to Hatteras.

How did you get started? : I started wedding coordinating in 2000 after planning my own wedding. The owners of the catering company that catered my wedding wanted to start a wedding coordinating business and hired me to help get them started.

What makes you different from your fellow vendors? : First of all would be my years of experience. I’ve been a wedding coordinator on the Outer Banks for over 15 years. Also, my training and certification from the Association of Bridal Consultants.

What is your favorite or most rewarding part about what you do? : I love getting to know my couples and their families. It is an honor to be a part of their big day. I miss my couples after their weddings, because we’ve worked so closely for such a long time.

Finish this sentence: “Wish wish more couples would……” : Hire local vendors. It makes all the difference in the world when your “wedding team” knows each other and knows the venue where they are working.

What is the best piece of advice you can offer to couples on their wedding day? : I tell my couples to breath and enjoy the day. I know things can be stressful and overwhelming. However, I want them to enjoy their family and friends coming together to celebrate their marriage. Don’t sweat the small stuff. That is what I’m there for!

What’s your favorite wedding memory or funny story? : I had a bride who had lost her father a few years before her wedding. She had three older brothers that were all eager to make her day special. When it came time for the Father/Daughter dance they each took turns dancing with her. There was not a dry eye in the house.

What current weddings trends to do you like the most? Dislike the most? : I like that in this day and age you don’t have to following strict wedding etiquette. I always tell my couples how things are traditionally done, but then encourage them to put their own spin on things. I think it brings a uniqueness to a wedding and allows a couple’s personality to shine through.

If you could compile a list of your WEDDING FAVS, what would be your

  • Favorite wedding song : “Thinking out Loud” by Ed Sheeran.
  • Song NOT to include : “Gangnam Style”.
  • Must-use flower : I love ranunculus. It is such a sweet and soft flower.
  • Menu item : I say have fun with your food. Cocktail hour is a great time to offer a wide selection of food for your guests to try.
  • Drink : I think your wedding should reflect your style and taste. I like it when the specialty drink is one that is meaningful to the bride and groom. It could possibly be one of their favorite cocktails or made from wine from a favorite vineyard.
  • Wedding Tradition : I like it when the bride’s and groom’s parents walk out together in the recessional. I think it symbolizes the joining of two families.

Besides weddings, what else you like to do with your time? : Some of my favorite things is spending time with my husband and our big black lab. I also love spending time with friends going to dinner and the movies. Summer is my favorite time of year on the Outer Banks because I love going to the beach and sitting with my toes in the sand while reading a good book.

Just for fun – What are some of your favorite spots on the OBX? : I love walking in downtown Manteo. I love going to beach in south Nags Head. My two favorite restaurants are Mama Kwan’s and Kill Devil Grill. There is nothing better than on a summer evening going to Surfin’ Spoon for a little frozen yogurt and then talking a walk on Jennette’s Pier. Ahh…..
